Abstract

This research aims to understand the relationship between copyright and the lock-in effect in the software market. The sectors of operating systems in desktops and mobiles are investigated to provide a diagnosis of how the two elements above interact. The methodological framework consists in an empirical and qualitative analysis of content based on Epstein and King's rules of inference and on Zenon Bankowski's theoretical perspective of living lawfully. The main conclusion is that the lock-in effect does not occur throughout the whole software sector. Nevertheless, where it is observed, it is possible to note that copyright rules operate a degeneration of their moral aspiration and tend to promote a monopoly position for proprietary firms.
