Geographical indication and development: a current overview of the region covered by the “Vales da Uva Goethe” indication of source

Abstract

The paths that lead to the development of a region take into account the economic, environmental, social and cultural particularities of each area, as well as the direct and indirect participation of the public and private spheres of a given region. An alternative for small producers from less developed regions to enter the market, thus generating impacts on the development of the region, is the Geographical Indication, an intellectual property asset that provides differentiation and the guarantee of legal protection. It is an intellectual property registration granted by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) for collective use by the actors of a delimited region. Therefore, this study aims to identify the current panorama of the development of the Goethe Grape Valleys Indication of Source region. Methodologically, the study was characterized as descriptive and exploratory research as to its ends, with a bibliographical strategy, a data analysis technique and a qualitative approach. The research shows that the Goethe Grape Valleys region has shown positive increases in its economic indicators; however, it needs to address human and social issues in order to achieve a balanced condition of development for the region.
