A tribute to the life of Denis Borges Barbosa (1948-2016), written by his son and published shortly after his death. The account follows his musical training at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, his law degree at the Catete Law School of the then State University of Guanabara, his master's degree at Universidade Gama Filho under the supervision of Fábio Konder Comparato, his LLM at Columbia University and his doctorate at UERJ on the semiotics of trademarks. It records his work as counsel for Furnas, as Brazilian delegate in international intellectual property negotiations preceding the TRIPS Agreement, as general counsel of the INPI and as attorney of the city of Rio de Janeiro, as well as an output of more than fifty books and ninety articles, unpaid teaching at PUC-Rio, at the INPI and at PPED-UFRJ, and the practice of freely distributing his writings.
